Summary:
Simon Kirkland was contracted with another Modern Sport facilitator to develop and deliver a weekend of support in the area of governance and leadership for the Welsh Badminton Union.
Approach:
The diagnostic process involved a web-based survey and follow-up telephone calls enabled the weekend to be planned specifically to suit the needs of the members attending.
The weekend took the Board through the principles of sound governance, board competence needs, the role of the board in leading a sport and an action plan for the coming year in relation to Board training.
The desired outcomes of the weekend were:
- Understand the Modern Sport planning process
- An understanding of what is Corporate Governance
- Clarity to the role and function of the Governing Body and its Governance structure
- Clarity to the Board and Professional staff delivery and involvement of the Badminton Community in decision making
- Understand and agree the differing roles and relationship between the Board and the Professional staff
- Agree an action plan for the future year
Outcome:
8 WBU members and staff supported by Sports Council for Wales and two facilitators in attendance over 2 days led to an action plan addressing all the needs of two day workshop. A clearly laid out action plan was agreed with the Board prior to finishing the final workshop.
